Five simple steps you can take to unjam a blocked garbage disposal.
How in the world do you unclog a garbage disposal? If you’ve ever wondered about this, today I’ll walk you through the steps:
Step 1: Turn off the power. This is critical—you don’t want to interact with the disposal if there’s a chance it could turn on and cause injury. To guarantee that it won’t, find the cord to the unit and unplug it.
Step 2: Plunge the disposal. This will help get some of the liquid out of there.
Step 3: Identify the problem. Use a flashlight to look down the drain and find out what’s jamming your disposal.
Step 4: Remove the clog. Often, you can use a tool like needle-nose pliers to reach in and pull out whatever is obstructing your disposal.
Step 5: Plug your disposal back in and turn it on. There may be a red reset switch at the bottom of the unit you can push once you’ve plugged it in.
